3 Natural Ways to Have Whiter Teeth
We’re sure the health and beauty aisle in your local supermarket is full of teeth whitening products.
But, maybe you are one of those who prefer to use a more natural means of brightening your smile.
Our article will discuss three homemade natural teeth whitening options you can use to have a whiter smile.
But first, let’s talk about why your teeth may need to be brightened.
Why the need for whiter teeth?
Everyone wants a bright, white smile because it makes you look younger, healthier, and more attractive. But it can be hard to keep your pearly whites in a pristine state of whiteness. Why?
The outside of your teeth is covered with a thin, hard, protective coating. This porous outer layer, known as the enamel, can stain from the foods you eat and drink, cigarette smoking, or taking certain medications.
It is possible to remove these stains from your teeth with relative ease and effort.
Teeth whitening from our Orlando dentist, Dr. Karim Morales, uses a special gel with professional-strength whitening agents to draw out stains from the enamel.
There are also more natural ways to do this.
Natural ways to remove stains
One of the most natural ways to have whiter teeth is to use preventative means.
- Don’t eat staining foods and drinks, but if you do, either use a straw or brush and floss your teeth immediately afterward.
- Drink lots of water to help remove staining particles from your teeth.
- Don’t smoke or use tobacco products.
- Regularly use a stain-fighting toothpaste as part of your daily oral routine.
Often though, despite our best efforts, our tooth enamel becomes stained or yellowed
Here are some natural options that can remove stains and brighten tooth enamel.
1. Baking soda and hydrogen peroxide
Use a solution of 1 part peroxide to 1 part water to rinse around and between your teeth for about one minute.
Peroxide can penetrate the tooth enamel and lift away stains. It also acts as an antibacterial.
You can also use a mixture of peroxide and baking soda to create a runny paste you can use for brushing your teeth. A study in the Journal of Dentistry…This text is liked to the official website of Journal of Dentistry. It opens in a new window… showed that baking soda is very effective at removing plaque – the yellowish build-up you can get on your teeth.
2. Strawberries
These luscious fruits contain Malic acid that works on tooth enamel as a stain-fighter. For best results:
- Mash together 1 strawberry and 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
- Leave this paste on your teeth for five minutes
- Brush your teeth.
3. Apple cider vinegar (ACV)
This option is especially effective for removing coffee or nicotine stains on your teeth. Its natural acidity helps to break down plaque on tooth surfaces. Apply ACV to all surfaces of the teeth and rub for about one minute or combine two parts ACV to one part baking soda to create a paste. The best results will come with consistent, regular use.
Caution: Although these are considered natural whitening methods, that doesn’t mean they can be used without caution. The high acid content of some of these and the grittiness of others can actually be damaging to tooth enamel if not used properly. Experts advise that you use these options no more than once a week and that you thoroughly brush and rinse your teeth after their use.
The other drawback with these methods is that it takes a significant amount of time to see real results.
